International NASH Day – Bringing the Disease Into Focus
Today, June 12, marks the third annual International NASH Day. The NASH Education Program started this campaign in 2018 to raise awareness and urgency around nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its more advanced form, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The Global Liver Institute continues to spearhead a consortium of patient advocacy organizations, as well as medical and professional groups, to shine a light on this disease, its growing effect on our population, and associated rising costs.
Between 80 and 100 million Americans have NAFLD, and tens of millions suffer from NASH. By 2021, NASH will be the number one reason for liver transplantation, and all patients face a risk for liver cancer. Currently, we’re spending $5 billion annually in healthcare costs related to the disease. Which is why awareness is so critical.
At ObjectiveGI, we realize the increasing urgency to focus on NASH. And so we’re dedicated to developing new treatments with pharmaceutical partners and physicians who want to create centers of excellence focused on research of this disease.
